Will Saliva break my fast?

Will swallowing saliva break my fast?

Allaah said: “Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting; it is for Me and I shall reward for it.” (Bukhari)

Muslims are keen to protect their fast. People have many issues about fasting. Sometimes people fuss about their fast due to ignorance. Whereas Quran says:

“Allaah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you”. [al-Baqarah 2 : 185]

So we should remember that our intentions only to please Allah. Allah will forgive our shortcoming in our fast InshaAllah.

Hence if something is usually difficult to avoid and cannot be avoided, it does not affect the fast – which includes a person swallowing his saliva when fasting. Because saliva is produced within the body itself and is not something that we put in from outside.

Indeed, if one’s saliva is mixed with something else, such as blood from the gums or food that remained in the mouth, then the fast would be invalidated if swallowed deliberately. But one is not taking in any food or drink, simply swallowing the stuff of their own mouth producing saliva naturally. One is not gaining any sustenance nourishment or refreshment from it which is the body’s natural process. One need not to worry about it.

And Allah knows best.
