Misconceptions about Ayat-e-Kareema / Tasbih Yunus..!!

Let us first discuss about what exactly Ayat-E-Kareema or Tasbih Yunus is?

The terms AYAT – E -KAREEMA and Tasbih Yunus are terms given by people and according to them this is the dua “LA ILAHA ILLA ANTA SUBHANAKA INTI KUNTU MIN AZ ZALIMEEN – There is no God but You, Glorified be You! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers” which Prophet YUNUS AS read while he was in the Whales Belly.

Now let us know why and YUNUS AS landed into the Whales Belly?

Prophet YUNUS AS preached the message of Allah to the people of Nineveh (which was a city) for a very long time, but they did not respond well to his call. When he felt that his preaching was not going to make them change their ways, he took off in anger. He boarded a ship filled with other passengers. After some time, the ship ran into a storm. The people on the ship cast lots, with the idea that the person whose name shows up should be thrown overboard. The name of YUNUS AS came up in the drawing three times, after which he threw himself into the sea.

Allah commanded a huge whale to swallow YUNUS AS without hurting him or breaking his bones. YUNUS AS realized that he had made a mistake by leaving his town and its people without the permission of Allah. This was why he was now imprisoned in this strange way in the belly of a whale in the depths of the ocean.

Upon realizing his error, he repented sincerely to Allah, and called out to his Lord in the following words: “LA ILAHA ILLA ANTA SUBHANAKA INTI KUNTU MIN AZ ZALIMEEN – There is no God but You, Glorified be You! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers”.

Allah was so pleased with his repentance that He brought YUNUS AS out from the darkness of the whales belly, and the whale threw YUNUS AS on a flat and plain shore. At that time he was weak and sick. Allah caused a plant of gourd to grow over him, and by His grace and mercy sent him to a hundred thousand people who all believed in him.

Making dua and asking ALLAH SWT is never wrong and one should definitely pray and ask ALLAH SWT for it. But specifying a certain Ayah or Surah or the no. of times it should be read or a particular time when it should be read is pure BIDDAH (Innovation) and

Jaabir RA narrated Allahs Messenger pbuh said, “To proceed: The best speech is the Book of Allah and the best guidance and example is that of Muhammad, and the worse of all things are the newly invented things (in the religion), for every innovation is a error and a misguidance.” (Muslim) “…Every innovation is a going astray and every going astray is in the fire.” (Tirmidhi).

When one tell people its Biddah they start arguing and they say ” Whats the Harm? We are reading the Ayah from the Quran only..Its just ALLAHs words..So what? It can never harm anyone. Allah is watching. We haven’t added something new…The Surahs and its Ayahs were revealed to be read etc. Our elders have been doing this and we have to follow them.

Well the answer to all this is:
There is no authenticity that this particular Ayah is KAREEM. The whole Quran is KAREEM..every single Aayah of the Quran is jalaali or full of wisdom, guidance, and power. So why specify one particular ayah only? One has to follow the creator and not the creation. So what if the elders have been doing it and they tell you to do it as well? Cant they be wrong..? it’s an INNOVATION and unfortunately many follow it. Its just that our elders and all must have been doing it and hence its very difficult for us not to follow it. But all we should do is state the facts and ask the elders for proofs (ANY QURAN VERSE or STRONG HADITH) to prove us wrong. If they cant , then you know whats right and whats not. Reading Duas, Surahs or its Ayahs is not a problem…but specifying a particular Dua , Surah or Ayah is Definitely ALLAH will reward you for reading the Quran but ONLY if you read it the way PROPHET pbuh used to read it.

But there is a hadith:
When saying the du’aa’, “Laa ilaaha illa anta, subhaanaka, inni kuntu min al-zaalimeen ([none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) be You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers – cf al-Anbiya’ 21:87]).” It was narrated in a saheeh hadeeth that the Prophet pbub said: “The prayer of Dhu’l-Noon (Yunus) which he said when he was in the belly of the whale: ‘Laa ilaaha illa anta, subhaanaka, inni kuntu min al-zaalimeen ([none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) be You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers.’ No Muslim recites this du’aa’ concerning any matter but Allaah will answer him. (Al-Tirmidhi)

Allah and His Messenger pbuh have declared no restrictions upon the believers who wish to call upon and supplicate their Merciful Lord; and no one has a right to put restrictions in the deen where Allah and His Messenger pbuh have put none!Whoever puts such restrictions or conditions on a believer, when Allah and His Messenger pbuh have not put any and those who do so from himself than they invent lies.

“Nothing is more dear to Allah than one’s supplication to Him.”
(Al-Tirmidhi)

Adding something new to the religion, start reading it in groups and give it a specific number, even a chain of Ayat Kareema has been introduced to delude people furthermore which the Prophet pbuh hasn’t done is pure BIDDAH (Innovation) and we just cant do it. Finally if one read this particular Ayah just because you want to think ALLAH helped YUNUS AS and he shall help us too or read it generally then its OK but if one want to gather people and specify the date , time and number of times it should be read ..then its totally wrong and will be considered as Biddah. Its the NIYYAH (intention) that counts. We can supplicate to Allah anytime, anywhere to ask for His help. Only true knowledge of Islam can protect and enlighten us.

Rest ALLAH knows best.
