Zina (adultery or fornication) in Islam

Zina (adultery or fornication) is one of the worst of sins. It is clearly forbidden in Islam. Zina could be in two ways. One is fornication (sexual intercourse between two people who are not married to each other) and the other is adultery (sex between someone who is married and someone who is not their wife or husband).

“The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment”. (Qur’an 24 : 2)

The holy Qur’an labels Zina as a grave sin, about which Allah order in the Quran to stay away from Zina in Surah Al-Isra

وَلَاوَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.(17:32)

Below hadith is an explanation of the question. Then will understand the wisdom behind it and why it’s forbidden in Islam.

“O Messenger of Allah! Give me permission to commit Zina (unlawful sex).

A young man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Give me permission to commit Zina (unlawful sex).’

The people surrounded him and rebuked him, saying, “Stop! Stop!”

But the Prophet said, “Come close.” The young man came to him, and he (saw) said,

“Sit down” so he sat down.

Then Prophet said, “Would you like it (unlawful sex) for your mother”

He said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, “Neither do the people like it for their mothers”.

The Prophet said, “Would you like it for your daughter”

He said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, “Neither do the people like it for their daughters”.

The Prophet said, “Would you like it for your sister”

He said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, “Neither do the people like it for their sisters”.

The Prophet said, “Would you like it for your paternal aunt.”

He said, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Messenger! May I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, “Neither do the people like it for their paternal aunts.”

The Prophet said, “Would you like it for your maternal aunt.”

He said, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Messenger! May I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, “Neither do the people like it for their maternal aunts.”

Then the Prophet put his hand on him and said, “O Allah, forgive his sin, purify his heart and guard his chastity.”

After that the young man never paid attention to anything of that nature.
[Narated by Abu Umamah recorded by Imam Ahmad]

There are many logical reasons why Zina is forbidden in Islam:

It’s considered a major sin. This is because the main purpose of religion is to encourage mankind to create a peaceful society. The very basic unit of a society is the family. Zina is the leading cause that tends to break up a family, dirupts the peace of family and society

▪ It increases the likelihood of illegitimate children which lead to many problems.

▪ t increases the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The spread of diseases like AIDS would be virtually impossible if people were following Islamic prohibitions.

▪ Widespread Zina leads to the cultural acceptance of shamelessness and the cheapening of sex.

▪ When it comes to zina by married people (adultery), this is a crime which tears families apart, spreads distrust and resentment, and damages the very fabric of society. It is also immensely painful for a person’s spouse.

▪ If somebody is willing to commit zina, and feels no regret about it, then this may lead to increased willingness to commit other sins.

One of the incident at the time of Prophet pbub that people used to come confessing their sin snd asking for punishment. It’s only possible when they fear their lord and accountability of the hereafter. This incident will touch our hearts. Zina punishment as per ordained by Allah in Chapter Noor.

“Imran b. Husain reported that a woman from Juhaina came to Allaah’s Prophet pbub and she had become pregnant because of adultery.

She said: Allaah’s Prophet, I have done something for which (prescribed punishment) must be imposed upon me, so impose that.

Allaah’s Prophet pbuh called her master and said: Treat her well, and when she delivers bring her to me. He did accordingly.

Then, she came after delivery, Prophet pbub asked her to breast feed her child. Then she again came with child (when he could eat food)..

Then Allaah’s Prophet pbub pronounced judgment about her and her clothes were tied around her and then he commanded and she was stoned to death.

He then prayed over her (dead body). Thereupon Umar said to him: Allaah’s Prophet, you offer prayer for her, whereas she had committed adultery!

Thereupon, Prophet pbub said: She has made such a repentance that if it were to be divided among seventy men of Medina, it would be enough. Have you found any repentance better than this that she sacr ficed her life for Allaah, the Majestic? (Sahih Muslim)

So, it is obvious that zina is a crime which does immense damage, both to those who commit it, and to society in general.

May Allah protect all of us against this terrible sin.
