When Prophet Muhammad pbuh was appointed to convey the message of God. One should keep in view the conditions of Mecca before the advent of Islam. The society was governed by those people who had might, power and influence on the society. In such conditions, if anyone who proclaimed to believe in one God and declared himself a Muslim was not an easy job, as it was an open challenge to the society, a person should be ready for the consequences and he had been tortured physically, mentally and emotionally.
Such were the conditions when prophet Muhammad pbub openly said that he is a Muslim and invited others towards Islam, accomplishing his duty honestly and wholeheartedly. And witnessing to the truth by not just mere words but by his conduct and character that no one should have a cause to find fault with him and with those who uphold it. Indeed, he fulfilled the mission courageously assigned by God. He did everything in the framwework of humanity and justice. The Quran repeats many times that Prophet Muhammad pbuh is neither superhuman nor a deity, but that he is a human being. All Prophets that came before Mohammad pbuh were also human beings as Allah chose whosoever for His Prophethood. Quran verifies this truth over and over again.
“And this is a Book which We have sent down, blessed and confirming what was before it, that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are maintaining their prayers”. (Quran 6 : 92)
Prophets themselves didn’t have any power yet they were guided and protected by God. Besides, the Almighty God supported His Prophets with miracles and the great miracle of Mohammad pbuh is Quran. Although, the assigned task was very challenging that to eradict the pre-islamic system and established the relgion of Islam at individual and collective level. That was the actual point of fear and apprehension of Pagans as they were the trustee of Kaba, due to custodian of kaba they had been given the power and authority but if they would agree with the divine mesage what prophet Muhammad pbuh was conveying that means losing all the dignity that’s the reason they strongly opposed this message. On the other hand, Prophet Muhammad pbuh sincerely and constantly conveying the message of Islam, furthermore his main objective was to save humanity from being misguided therfore he faced and went through all the trauma, pain and humiliation challenges given by the opponent and in addition he had forgiven them that was the beauty and power of his character. Allah says “Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow”. (Qur’an 18: 6)
Below verse is repeated three times in the quran. Allah clearly specify the Prophet’s mission and his responsibility.
“It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as Witness”.(surah Al Fatah : 28)
And a number of times the Prophet pbuh would enter his house covered with soil, because the unbelievers would throw soil on him. Fatima RA would run to him, and she would start wiping off the dirt from him, while she would be crying. And again the Prophet pbuh would tell her with full trust in God “don’t cry my daughter for indeed God will make your father victorious” with firm blief in God. This matter will certainly reach every place.
In order to persuade the Prophet to give up calling to the oneness of God, the Arab polytheist came to the uncle of Prophet Muhammad pbuh, Abu Talib, and insisted him to stop these activities otherwise it would turn into a bitter relationships. Abu Talib was deeply distressed by this threat. He sent for his nephew and told him what the Quraish had said “Spare me and yourself and put not burden onmethst I can’t bear.” Upon this the prophet pbuh thought that his uncle would let him down and would no longer support him.
The Prophet pbuh replied (to his uncle), “O my uncle! by Allah if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left on condition that I abandon this course, until Allah has made me victorious, or I perish therein, I would not abandon it.” (Despite all the odds, Muhammad pbuh persisted and his determination and courage never weakened).
The Prophet [pbuh] got up, and as he turned away, his uncle called him and said, “Come back, my nephew,” and when he came back, he said, “Go and preach what you please, for by Allah I will never forsake you.”
The Holy Prophet said: God has favored me more than the other prophets in six ways:
1) I have been endowed with the gift of speech which is brief but full of knowledge.
2) I was granted victory owing to my awe.
3) The spoils of war were made lawful unto me.
4) The whole earth has been made the place of worship for me and it has become the means of purification for me also.
5) I have been sent to the whole world.
6) And the line of prophets has come to its final end in me.
(Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah; quoted fromTafsir Ibn Kathir).
This was the condition in which Prophet Muhammad pbuh began the message of Islam and spent 13 years calling people to Islam in makkah.
