Knowledge in Islam

Knowledge in Islam

“And say: My Lord, increase me in knowledge.” (Quran 20:114)

Anas RA reported: The Messenger of Allah pbuh said, “He who goes forth in search of knowledge is considered as struggling in the Cause of Allah until he returns.” [At-Tirmidhi].

Islam is the religion of knowledge. The first verse of the Qur’aan to be revealed enjoined reading which is the key to knowledge. Allaah says :

“Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists).

Knowledge is one of the God’s attributes, commanding man to read and enhance their knowledge. Even when God created Adam pbuh so He had not only bestowed some authority upon man, but had also endowed him with knowledge and emphasised on teaching which is the first step of knowledge. God (the teacher/ معلم) taught Adam AS who was the first human created by God. The knowledge has been important aspect as God preparing Adam for the leadership of earth. Only the power of knowledge can make human superior to other creation. That’s why man is the masterpiece of the creation. In fact, the greatest of all creations is man himself, possess the marvellous intellect.

“And He taught Adam all the names (of everything) , then He showed them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful.” (Qur’an 2 : 31)

“They (angels) said: “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise.” (Quran 2 : 32)

In Islam, one of the primary responsibility towards God is seeking knowledge. “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” (At-Tirmidhi). Knowledge open the door of wisdom, help us to understand the true reality of the Creator as well as realising the superamacy of God in the Universe which expand our vision and give wider dimension to our understanding, result in making us more obedient to Him. Knowledge is identified in Islam as worship. The acquiring of knowledge or traveling to gain knowledge is as if struggling in God’s path. God shower His mercy upon them. If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, God will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man. It’s considered one of the most highest act in islam. Those who are in this path will earn a great reward and blessings.

May God grant us beneficial knowledge and protect us from knowledge that does not benefit. Ameen.
