The importance of Surah Al-Fatiha : Surah Al-Fatiha is the first Surah of the Holy Quran. It is named Al-Fatihah because of its subject-matter. The expression Al-Fatiha means “The Opening (Chapter)”. In other words, Al-Fatihah is a sort of preface. Surah Al-Fatiha is mentioned in the Quran as the seven oft repeated verses because it is repeated several times in the course of the five daily prayers.
As a matter of fact, we learn from authentic traditions that it was the first complete Surah which was revealed to Muhammad pbuh. Before this, only a few verses were revealed which form parts of `Alaq, Muzzammil, Muddaththir, etc. Surah Al-Fatiha is prayer so it’s a cure for many disease. So important that we recite it five times a day in Salaah, but missing Surah Al-Fatiha will invalidate our Salaah.
The theme of this Surah is in fact a prayer which God has taught to all those who want to seek guidance. It has been placed at the very beginning of the book to teach this lesson to the reader: if you sincerely want to benefit from the Quran, you should offer this prayer to the Lord of the Universe. The whole Qur’an is the mercy and blessings of the God but you can benefit only when you consciously ask for guidance as no on one can provide you guidance, only God can grant it. This chapter is supplication have been taught by the God to recognize and acknowledge Him as the lord of the Universe who is the source of all Knowledge and Guidance
It becomes clear that the real relation between Al- Fatiha and the Quran is not that of an introduction or preface to a book but that of a prayer and its answer. Al-Fatiha is the prayer from the servant and the Quran is the answer from the Master to his prayer. The servant prays to God to show him the guidance and the Master presents the whole of the Quran before him in answer to his prayer, as if to say, “This is the Guidance you begged from Me.”
The Subject of Surah Fatiha contains the basic creed of Islam which has been Introduced briefly in the first chapter of the Qur’an.
• Absolute Monotheism,
• Firm belief in the resurrection and Day of Judgement,
• Belief on the Prophets and revelation (Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them all) and last revelation to Prophet Muhammad pbuh.
“Guide us to the straight path” is the core message of this Surah and the spirit of all our prayers. As God is the source of all Guidance.
May God guide us in all wak of our lives.
