“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are
(Qur’an 66 : 6)
“Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. The leader of people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects. A man is the guardian of his family and he is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husband’s home and his children and she is responsible for them. The servant of a man is a guardian of the property of his master and he is responsible for it. No doubt, every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock.” (Bukhari)
Religion of Islam guide people and encompasses to all aspects of his life, which includes faith, worship, morality, social, economic and political life but also define how to achieve family integrity as well as upbringing the childern to be of the best character in this world. Since children are a special gift and blessings from Allah which can’t be matched with any other thing of the world. Parents should faithfully accomplish this responsibility as they would be answerable to God. Parents profound duty is to instill islamic faith into child. Mother plays a key role in upbringing the children, that’s the reason Messenger of Allah pbuh said prefer a righteous lady for marriage.
“The best gift from a Father to his child is education and upbringing.” (Tirmidhi)
Both parents are responsible for their children’s upbringing and moral conduct. It should be from beginning and parents should try to imbibe the children with good Islamic values and teaching. So parents need to practice Islam as well as instruct their children and family members to apply it. This is the best way we can inspire them by our action. This is the duty of both parents to raise their children as a righteous Muslim. The Holy Quran awakens the spirit of parenting by making us realize that children are not only the joy of our lives, but also a trust from Allah in our hands.
Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world…… (Qur’an 18 : 46]
Your wealth and your children are only a trial, whereas with Allah! With Him is a great reward (Paradise). [ Qur’an 64 : 15]
The Prophet Muhammad pbub said, “Each child is born in a state of “Fitrah”, then his parents make him a Jew or a Christian or a Polytheist”.(Sahih Muslim)
Quran has given the guidelines in this regard that children should be treated with utmost love and affectionate the basic teaching of Islam like offering Salah, reciting Quran, good manners and try to make them inclined towards it but if they don’t pay heed and disobey then be strict with them by the age of ten. Modern child pshycology research reveal what the Quran has mentioned about the training programme for child. The child’s training has to be divided into 3 stages “Play with them for seven years with love and affection , then discipline them for seven years, then be his/her friend for seven years then give free! rein to them.” When Napoleon said, ‘Give me good mothers and I will give you a good nation’ ! What does it mean ? The statement implies that a proper upbringing is needed to have a proper society. Napoleon, or whoever may have said it, implies that any country where the mothers are devoted to their children would be able to produce a stable and successful society. As Mother is the social engineer of the society.
Essentially, we need to maintain islamic environment, so it will become easy for us to abide by its teachings. Parents play vital role in shaping and inculcate the chid moral compass. Parents should become the role models for their children. “Preach what you Practice” is the best methodology as children are like an uncut diomand its the parents who polish and shape them. So parenting is a great obligation for which they would be answerable. As children are representative of their parents as well as can become their Perpetual charity (sadqay Jaaria) even after their death.
The Prophet pbuh said, If a person dies, his/her deeds are cut off, except from three:
1. A pious child who makes dua for the parents.
2. Continuous charitable deeds.
3. Knowledge left behind with which people benefit. (Al-Tirmidhi)
The hadeeth clearly shows that the reward of the good deeds of children would also go to their parents, as well as the supplications of righteous children for their parents is duly accepted by Allah.
Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous”.(Quran 25 :74)
