In Arabic, the phrase Azwaj-i-Muthairat means “the pure wives” and refers to the women to whom Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was married. Muslim respect and honour prophet pbuh as well as prophet’s wives (pbut).
The Quran characterizes the wives of the Prophet as the “Mothers of Believers”: “The Prophet is closer to the Believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers” (al-Ahzab 33/6).
Prophet Muhammed pbuh had 13 wives and Khadijah bint Khuwaylid r.a, Zaynab bint Khuzayma r.a, and Rayhana bint Zaid r.a died in his life so he had 10 wives at the time of his death. Prophet pbuh lived with khadija r.a for 25 years. From age 25 to 50 he had one wife, Khadijah r.a. and she was the only wife of prophet till 50 years of Prophet’s age. Between ages 51 and 60 he married all his other wives for many noble reasons. Prophet pbuh had 12 wives as there were social and political reasons and purposes behind these marriages. “It is, however, worthy to note that of all of Prophet muhammad pbuh wives except Aisha r.a (unmarried 3rd wife) all the rest were widow, divorcee and slave woman so as to protect and care them and gave them dignity in the society, set an example for the followers to be compassionate and kinds towards them”.
Prophet pbuh himself was a role model for the Muslim men, but to clear the doubts of Muslim women and to set an example for them it was important to have certain women who knew the right way to guide us as well as to support his mission and to assist him.

The Prophet Muhammad, pbuh is the most excellent example as father and husband. He was very kind and tolerant towards his wives. They could not live, they could not envisage life, without him. They could not live away from him. Prophet pbuh treated all his wife equally and used to do justice among them. Even during this difficult period, he continued to act kindly and gently towards his wives. The Holy Prophet pbuh, always gave strict equal treatment to all his wives and never discriminated between them. Urwah bin Zubayr r.a was a nephew (sister’s son) of Ayesha r.a. He inquired of his aunt as to how the Holy Prophet treated his wives. Ayesha r.a said that he treated them with justice and complete equality.
Allah’s Messenger said: “The best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wives.” [al-Tirmidhi]
Muhammad himself frequently counseled Muslim men to treat their wives and daughters well. “You have rights over your women,” he is reported to have said, “and your women have rights over you.” He established explicit rights for women.Prophet pbuh urged Man to treat women well.
Sawda r.a was the second wife of Prophet Muhammed pbuh who alleviated the sadness of the Prophet upon Khadija’s death, who did the housework, who fulfilled the duty of motherhood for six children. She consoled prophet pbub after the death of khadiha r.a.
In fact, we can see that the Messenger pbuh was the perfect head of family. Managing many women with ease, being a lover of their hearts, an instructor of their minds, an educator of their souls, he never neglected the affairs nor compromised his duties. Hetreated them fairly, tolerating for their happiness even helping them in the household duty. This was the Messenger of God.
Holy Prophet pbuh Said: ” The Prophet (PBUH) said that if a man has two wives and does not treat them equally, he would be raised on the Day of Judgment with half his body paralyzed. [Tirmidhi]
