The Sharia definition of bid’ah is: “A newly fabricated way [beliefs or action] in the religion, in belief in the Sharee’ah (prescribed Law), by which nearness to Allah is sought, [but] not being supported by any authentic proof – neither in its foundations, nor in the manner in which it is performed.” Furthermore, Introducing it as a part of Deen.
Biddah is basically an additional beliefs or doings for which there is no authority, accountability, obligation or recommendation. Whereas Islamic teachings encourage and motivate every individual to act righteously, and as a whole..Ummah has been given the freedom to do good deeds and attain nearness to God.. Biddah is the additional practice which is not the part of the islamic theology, obligatory teachings of the Quran as well as not recommended by Prophet pbuh. Basically, we need to develop the knowledge and understanding of Quran then only we will get the true image of Islam, following the religion blindly is not the way as well as not the teachings of Islam.
Some of the practices that muslims have adapted have no basis in Quran and neither were they practiced by Prophet Muhammad pbuh or any of His Companions. Innovations which are deluding people away from being concious about God and the hereafter are discouraged in Islam. Anything which could easily lead the masses towards confusion and distortion should be avoided even if it seems very normal In that present time.
Anything that will not mislead people away from the core and principles of faith can be considered and adapted. But practices that do not relate with the legislation of the Quran and sunnah should be discouraged. Innovating new things in worship is wrong. Only those forms of worship are acceptable which are commanded by Allah & were the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad pbuh. Briefly, keep Islam simple and not complicate it for it will be different for future generations. Islam cannot be associated and disciplined with specific norms of a certain period of time.
Therefore the principles of faith have been laid down in he Quran to keep a common platform and code for all followers in different centuries and ages. So that mankind can be rested under one same roof. Hence the practice of prayer, fasting and charity are one of the core disciplines. They cannot be changed or modified as per need, for the sake of the greater purpose; which is the equality and oneness of all mankind. And it is this oneness God prefers for his creation, the human being, over ages and ages, through all species of the human being; the same code of conduct and worship.
…And whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it, and from whatever he forbids you, keep back, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is severe in retributing (evil) (Quran 59 :7)
Prophet Muhammed pbuh said: “… “Every fabrication is misguidance and all misguidance is in the Hellfire”. (Nasaa’ee)
The holy Quran is the Source of guidance for mankind. And Allah is the Source of strength.
