Story-writing in Islamic perspective…

images (3)Every person of this Universe is unique in nature, ability, skills, and intellect. This indeed is a great gift of God. We see different people with different ability. That’s why speaking, writing, intelligence and creativity are not alike with any given two individuals.

Speech and writing are most attractive gift of the Creator to express their view. Books expand human intellectual outlook, writing allows us to get our good thoughts out of our mind and onto paper and gives great ideas. When an individual pens down his thoughts it can either be a source of goodness which brings him closer to God or get him deviated from God’s remembrance..A writing or a thought transformed into words can be so effective that it can inspire an individual to such an extent that it becomes a way of life either for welfare to the society or doom the society.

The Intention of an author is very important. It gives an insight not only on the mentioned topic but also about himself. If a person intends fame, name, money then not necessary he writes something good in the sight of God. But if a person’s intention is to seek pleasure of God and also be a good source of inspiration to people then this will benefit him in this world and the hereafter.

The ability to write is also from God. We should be using our God gifted skills in the way of God. A person’s good work can be a perpetual charity (sadaqa-e-jariya) for him where he receive reward even after his death. Good advice is important to give If God has blessed you with knowledge in the form of speeches, lectures, books, articles etc. Now for critics, there can arise questions that may make them think that, is Islam so narrow minded or how conservative that it even writing or freedom of speech is restricted?

Well definitely not… Islam is most practical solution to humanity. Islam was revived 1400 years ago by Quran where eloquence was at its peak. Quran was a gift to mankind which was in an entirely literary form and linguistic miracle, that led to the dramatic intellectual revival of desert Arabs. Quran itself is a most beautiful work of highest eloquence. Quran emphasises to read and man has been taught the writing skill. First revelation of the Quran is evidence which encourage us to read and write.

Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created. He has created man from a leech-like clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not.” Surah Al-’Alaq (The Clot) 96: 1-5

But we should remember while writing that it should not contain anything that is contrary to sharee‘ah, or matters that Islam came to oppose and warn against. Such things include shirk (association of others with God), innovation and evil words, deeds and behavior, not contain lies about historical events or real incidents. If it is a story based on imagination, then there is nothing wrong with that, to inspire the reader through the charchter. It should not be romantic fiction containing “Fahshaa”(immorality) or even evil stories or fantasies which are Haram in Islam.

The Allah knows best.
